The problem is, the superior experience is the intended experience, and when players are left playing an inferior game, they may not enjoy it enough to feel the need to invest in the paid version. It's an effective advertising technique: placing the player in a situation where they can understand the appeal of the game while locking the superior experience behind a subscription fee.
#FINAL FANTASY XIV FREE TRIAL FOR FREE#
Because the free trial only allows access to the early game, and because it severely limits access to multiplayer functionality, it's a frustratingly imperfect way to experience a beloved game.Įnhanced multiplayer functionality seems like a strong motivator for free trial players to buy the Starter Edition of Final Fantasy XIV. Still, it is an MMO, and the early game in particular is designed to be experienced with others. It even turns into a solid solo game towards the end of A Realm Reborn. Without a meaningful understanding of the social aspect of the game, free trial players can't get a real grip on the true FFXIV experience.įinal Fantasy XIV does get good. It's hard to make an informed decision about whether or not to pay for an MMO when you have basically no idea what the second "M" actually entails. The biggest problem with the free trial's significant restrictions on multiplayer is simply that it keeps the trial from being a genuine representation of the game. At the same time, free trial players can expect to struggle with making new friends in-game, since private messaging and guilds are both locked behind the paid membership. Players who start the game alongside their friends won't be able to party up until one of them decides to spend money on the game. For most, though, the experience will be largely solitary. Often, when recommending the trial to friends, veteran players with a paid membership will offer to accompany them through the early game, turning the game from a fairly boring trek through Eorzea to a quality experience with valued buddies. The FFXIV community is aware of the problem with A Realm Reborn.

The narrative pacing is nonsensical, and since combat isn't especially fun until relatively far into the game, the gameplay isn't especially compelling either. While that may be true for recent expansions like Endwalker, A Realm Reborn, the campaign which makes up the first 50 levels of play and a little more than half of the free trial, is an absolute slog without friends. RELATED: Final Fantasy XIV Adds a Giant Shiba Inu Mount and Fans are Losing Their MindsĪ common refrain among FFXIV fans is that the game is more of an RPG than an MMO, and that it's perfectly suited for solo play for those who simply want to enjoy the story. In short, playing FFXIV on a free trial can be a very lonely experience. On top of that, trial players can't use the /shout command to send a message that everyone can hear, nor can they use the /tell command to send a message to one player. They also can't join Free Companies, FFXIV's take on guilds. Free trial players can be invited to join parties, but they aren't allowed to form them for themselves.

Final Fantasy XIV's free trial comes with some pretty harsh restrictions on multiplayer.
